February 2023 - Deadly Love Bean
Abrus precatorius, or the deadly love bean. The plant is best known for its seeds, which are used as beads and in percussion instruments. Also known as jequirity bean or rosary pea, a single seed, well chewed and ingested, can be fatal to both adults and children. It also has a history of being used as a weapon against animals when used as a paste to coat spikes. If you're celebrating love this February, abrus precatorius might be a beautiful, if deadly, ornament.
